For the first few years I always carried a list with the 10 elements around with me. whenever I felt stuck, I knew I only had to go through the list once and the answer would be obvious.

How to accompany your own solo

As bass players we often run into the situation of being left alone when we finally get to take a solo. Back in the days when the electric bass was not yet a thing, there was a good reason that the whole band stopped playing during a bass solo. Otherwise whatever the double bass player was doing wasn’t going to heard very well. Unfortunately, this “tradition” still is in the back of the head of many musicians (especially in jazz). One way to create some sense of harmony is playing a lot of arpeggios and use voice leading. This kinda puts you into a corner though and limits your choices. 

Another situation could be when your playing a solo gig. Or a duo concert with a singer. What other options do you have besides of playing on top of a static loop?
